Sydney and Maureen Hurlstone Live in Tremorfa. Sydney worked in the Steel Works
After the war finished the airport was used as a commercial airport for Cardiff, it was RAF Cardiff and then the aerodrome until 1946 when it became Cardiff airport. If people were going on holiday they would fly from there, going out of the country they would fly from here to Bristol or Manchester. It gradually developed that the private airport in Roose and St: Athens took over from this one. There used to be a runway left there that you could still see but the have built Rover works over it now so it has gone. MH: I used to walk with dad all over there, over the tide fields. SH: They opened St Albans Social Club over there, I went there sometimes. MH: There used to be a gang of us that went up the Old Airport Pub, there used to be a gang of us who would go there on Sunday's. We would put the Sunday dinner in the oven. He would race home and then we would go down the pub. SH: I used to work 6-2 on a Sunday and I would always bully my relief to come in early so I could dash home and have a quick shave and put my good jacket on and we would race up the pub for an hour. There was a load of us all middle aged and we would meet up there. MH: There used to be all the old local people that would drink in there, you know the same age that I am now. They would all be in the pub. I haven't been there for 8 years; there is a different lot up there now. We would all come home for dinner and then have a sleep for the rest of the afternoon.
