George Nicholas grew up on Taff Embankment. He used to play in the Taff and bunk off school to go down the docks

They call this now the city of Arcades but if we had had the canal's as well my God what a place this city would be. People would come down into the city on barges and all the rest of it. It would have been great but course this city is short term they are only out for money. You can see that with the bay. They ruined the best part of Cardiff by taking the people out of the bay. They were beautiful people. All colours, all languages but beautiful people. If you wanted a fight you could go down there and get a fight but if you wanted to enjoy yourself you can enjoy yourself. There was this one time when I was a kid, me and my friend would bunk off from school- you would have to watch out for the boardy (like that guy in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the child snatcher.) If he caught you out on the street he would go to your parents. Anyway we decided to go down the docks and have a bit of fun on the canal which was a bit stupid because your mother would always know when you had been down the canal because you would come back with mud up to your knees. We were coming back home and we come into Loudon Square and there was a wedding party out on the street and this great big black hand got me on the shoulder and I thought oh watch this now. His hands were like plates. I looks up, 'hello Mr.' ' What you doing? Why aren't you in school?' I said 'Day off'. So he got us a drink of pop each and we stayed there most of the afternoon.
