Richard O'Connell is an art teacher and local artist. He has travelled all over the city drawing local scenes.
There used to be a lot of old time bums and ruffs in those days and they would have their patch, you couldn't go round to certain street corners because they would occupy them. Opposite the Royal Tudor by the Taff bridge used to be terrible. The bus station was the same. There were chaps that were permanently blotto- very sad cases really. The Street that impressed me most at that time was Pontcanna. I lived at the top end of Cathedral Road in a guest house to start with for about 6 months, run by a Greek man. He was great he was, he would let me stay for 2/3 of the price. It was a beautiful street then- They have messed it up a bit now, but it was beautiful just to walk down. That in fact was one of the things I remember that, and the Arcades- Cardiff is the city of Arcades.
