I can remember VE day very clearly and there being street parties across the city with fancy dress and you were allowed to make a bonfire for once amongst all this austerity. I was at Howard Gardens High School then. The school was partially bombed because we used to use Heathfield House science lab. I remember the Art room was the little piece that had survived. To get to it you went up a staircase and out into the open sky and then into this little room.
At Grangetown school my first teacher was Miss Morgan. I left there to go to Howard Gardens. I also had a sister and she stayed with my grandmother until the end of the war.
