Eileen Breslin has lived in Grangetown all her life and is a member of Grangetown History Society.
There also used to be Porters bakery up by where Grangetown library is now. I doubt it would pass any hygiene standards now because it was just wooden garage doors that opened and a bread-cutting machine. We kids would stand there and watch him cutting the bread. We used to look in and there would be this massive oven and you would be able to see all the loaves being cooked. He would take one load out and put another load in. My grandmother used to send me down there for a loaf of bread. I think it was 10p ha'penny. 5p in old money today. He would sell us this loaf of bread. Where it had risen up the side there would be this lovely hard crust. I am afraid there wasn't much left by the time we got back. Apparently he used to let people go in there and cook their Christmas cakes in the oven.
