Phil Babot came to Cardiff to study. He first lived in Roath and then moved to Windsor Esplanade In the Docks
Before moving to the bay I used to live around the corner from the beautiful globe cinema, which used to be on the corner of Albany and Welfield Road. They have now built the globe centre there. It used to be a beautiful Edwardian building with a globe on top of it. It was 2 films for 50p, which was cheap even then, but my God the place was a fleapit. Pigeons used to fly across in front of the screen. You would never sit in front of the stalls because kids would drop Coke onto you from the top. Once I was in there watching what would now be an 18 film- but then x-rated- these kids tried to sneak in the fire exit at the front and of course it let all the light in and the got caught. Everyone was laughing and cheering as they got dragged out by these two burly women. It was great but very moth ridden, seats with springs sticking out of them.
