Meraga's Dad was in the Icon Jazz band. She remembers growing up in Cardiff's jazz community
My memory is jumping on now to seeing bands in the pavilion. The amount of bands that used to come to Cardiff, The roof of the pavilion collapsed one year because of the snow. It just caved in. I remember I broke in with my friend and it was so weird we were inside the pavilion but it had no roof so you could stand on the stage and just see all the trees outside. There was this fucked up grand piano still there and stuff. The Pavilion was a big building, it has got to have been the size of the Market. It used to look like the Empire pool, they used to have stuff like the Ideal Home Exhibition- you know travelling shows, but it was also a place where bands would play. It is really odd because when they did eventually flatten it all that was left was some of the floor tiles and cars used to park there and stuff. But you could walk through this space and just feel like all these things have gone on here. It is almost like walking on sacred ground, like aborigines feel the energies from the floor- The clash were here, so were the specials and Suzi and the Banshees. I could almost feel the vibrations looking at those tiles. Now of course there is no trace because they have made it into a carpark.
