Deanne Pickstone is related to the Ashton's who originally owned the fish stall in the central Market.
I went to Roath Park school and there were about 50 children in my class because Marlborough road school had been bombed and they had to attend Roath Park school as well. So we had rather cramped conditions. Now and again we had air raids and when the alarm went we used to have to go out in very neat Crocodile lines to the air raid shelter. There were no lights in the air raid shelter and you couldn't have an oil lamp because it was too dangerous. The only light was the teachers torch. We didn't really seem afraid and most of the time we were singing songs and things like that. One of the funniest incidents, my friend said to me that she felt sick and the next moment she was sick in my lap. I was upset not because I was afraid but because she had ruined my skirt. In those days you either had hand- me- downs or clothes bought with precious coupons. I was scared to go home to my mother and tell her that my skirt was ruined.
