Douglas Bordic used to visit his Uncle and Great aunt down the docks. At 17 he joined the navy.
We used to have a doctor in Loudan square and when they were making that film Tiger Bay they done a lot of scenes there. Our Doctor was called Doctor Gervin and I always remember he had a big wax moustache and we stayed with him until about 1941 when he died. He had a leather couch for you to lay on and if you didn't have pneumonia when you got there you had it afterwards! I suffered with my chest and he used to say take your shirt off and lay on the couch and it was like laying on a fridge like. He didn't have a stethoscope he had a copper trumpet, which he would put to his ear and listen to your chest. I also remember him telling me, that he used to have a horse and trap in the back and one of his patients was in Cowbridge - just shows you how different it is, he said I go to Cowbridge with my horse and cart to see this lady. If it was wintertime he would take a great big handful of sugar lumps for the horse. And he would come home for Cowbridge like a Greyhound.
