Douglas Bordic used to visit his Uncle and Great aunt down the docks. At 17 he joined the navy.
You know the principality building on Queen Street. Then there is a pile of restaurants like Ha HA I have taken my granddaughter there- she thinks I am wild. Well there was a school there about 20 years ago. You won't believe it but there was an awful lot of residential houses in Cardiff and there was a school there which closed down during the war and I had to go there for my medical. It used to be the friary, an old fashioned school. I got in there and it was the first time I had to forget any shyness because I got in there and upstairs in the classrooms they said take all your clothes off and you were completely naked in there with a bunch of other men like. We saw 5 Doctors and each one seemed to specialise in something and I dressed, all the papers went to the gym and I looked at the Doctor and he said strip off and I had to undress again. I thought there must be something wrong. You had to be A1 - there was grades then the only exception was if you wore glasses. I asked what he was looking for and he said you have got a fast heart beat and I have to check you over. Right, you are A1 he said. When they were knocking it down I wish I had got a stone so I could say, I had my medical in here.
