Saying about the handcarts, I was just talking to Rita about this, you could go down Clive Street and hire a truck for 6p and then you could go to the gas works and buy the coke. My mother used to carry me down to where this chap had his truck, put me on the cart walk up, get the coke and then sit me on the coke to walk home. They would then off load the coke and take the truck back. I remember my mother saying many a time she would get me back and take my nappy off and it would be steaming! Because the coke was still warm.
