Gerald Celestine Stevens was born and grew up in Cardiff central. He later came back to do a social sciences degree.
There were other noises, like trams I remember the trams. I think the last one went in '51/'52. They were replaced by the trolley busses there was a single decker service that we called the doodle bug- don't ask me why, that would run from the monument to the Pierhead it would come into mill Lane, down Hayes bridge Road and straight down. I can just about remember travelling on trams. Event when they went there was a source of scavenging. The actual tramlines were laid from strip about 2 foot either side of them with these tar blocks either side or they had been there for years and made amazing fuel. We used nick them. Another source of fuel was coke. There would be a great big pile of it at the central Gas company and you would go in with a hand cart and they weigh it and sell it to you and you would use it to heat the house.
