Gerald Celestine Stevens was born and grew up in Cardiff central. He later came back to do a social sciences degree.

Where I came from Recycling was important because anything that you could sell, there would be rag and bone men, paraffin sellers, candle sellers, they would all come to the house to sell. They are almost iconic now. I found out that our house only had electricity put in, in the late 1930's, before that it was gas. There was also great characters, Dick Demasco the ice cream seller, he had this horse that pulled a beautiful glass cabinet on wheels. I can remember looking up at it and there was not electricity in them in those days the ice cream was totally chilled by ice and he would scope it out but the 4 sides of this glass cart were all engraved, I distinctly remember that. There was this other man who used to come around on a three-wheeled bicycle and he was a milkman. In the morning he would come around with great crates of milk. So there was this constant activity of the people who lived in Cardiff central of being served by all these other people.
