Mrs. Morgan grew up in Adamsdown and remembers the old market there, her husband also lived in the area.
It was a very interesting childhood because all of our activities were in the market. We had a little gardens around the corner on Constellation street and around Splott but we used to play in the market, the slaughter house in Cycle Street. All my childhood was there and the animals were driven down the road from the top of Pen-y-Lan Hill. They would come all the way down Albany Road and down City Road, past the infirmary and onto Clifton Street. Often you would get one escape and the children would be running after it. At night you would be lying in bed and you could hear all the animals, the cows lowing and the sheep. You would think you were out in the middle of the country. Not cows especially but sheep. They used to tell the tale that, well you didn't lock your front doors in those days, you didn't have to, it was in the summer and we were told that a sheep ran through the passage and out into the back garden. I can't remember that. But they would often escape or a pig would escape and the children would be running after it. The sheep would all be driven down and the road would be littered with sheep currents.
