Steve Murphy has lived in Cardiff all his life. He has written a book on the life of Jeramiah Box Stockdale. He has also done research into the old Courts (slums) of Cardiff and his own family history
The Courts/The Slums of Cardiff: The three worst ones were Landore Court, which used to be down next to Brains Brewery onto St Mary Street, this is where there were about 500 people living in about 10 houses. The other one was Kenton up where the Queens hotel is up on the left of St Mary's Street. It was by the Golate, so called because people used to run up there to catch a ship from Quay Street. Kenton Court was another one of the same sort, filthy, 3 privies for 700 people. Ramel wrote a report on the slums of Cardiff and claimed there were 45 courts, but I found 73 of these courts. They were predominantly filled with Irish people, in Landore court, one girl of 14 her job was recorded as maid of all work. Stanley Street that was another one, where the CIA is now, my uncle used to run the Catholic Club there, my grandmothers house was on Adam Street that backed onto Stanley Street. Stanley Street was another slum. At one time there were 54 people in one room, they were all hot bedding. They had a toilet in one room- the stench must have been atrocious. There are two courts left George Street, off Womanby Street, it used to be called Humanby Street but over the years it has changed.
