The relationship between the police and prostitutes was interesting because it was like two sides of the same coin. There was a girl murdered and her body was found up on Leckwith in the woods off a side road. The police were questioned by the press and the police said they were working on the basis that she is a prostitute. When asked why the police said she had been found in an area known to be used by prostitutes. It turned out that this poor girl had been a patient in Whitchurch hospital for quite along time. When her parents identified the body they made a statement that she wasn't a prostitute, she was mentally ill. The police actually went to the main head quarters of the prostitutes which was at a pub called the Custom House- it was famous. I spent a lot of time over there but because I knew a couple of the girls and I got to know them and interview them. Going back to the police when this girl were murdered or anyone else was hurt, the police would declare an amnesty and move into the pub in exchange for information. Of course girls gave the information about various clients etc. As soon as the police had got the information the amnesty ended.
