Winifred Thomas grew up in Maindy. She spent her early working life in service.

My dad played skittles at the Maindy hotel and he also played at the church hall. He would never play but he would always shake the can for money. We would go down to the canal and play in the park. One day I went down there and thought I would wash my feet. I looked down and I had cut my foot on a broken Flagon. Anyway I wouldn't stay home from school because I loved my school so because my foot was all bandaged up my sister would push me in a pram to school. I couldn't go to high school because mam couldn't afford it. Later on they had night school but that was too late for me. I used to learn Welsh but I was never any good at it. It was banned later on. Anyway during my Welsh lessons I would ask my other teacher if I could tidy the cupboard because I hated Welsh. The Welsh teacher used to come in and say this must be the tidiest school.
