I fell in the canal on two occasions, the first time I was pulled out by Ted Harris the second time I fell it was down by the second lock where the sand got dumped. The first time I fell in I was about 10 and I got all mucked up and covered in slime. I can remember walking home down South Church Street crying my eyes out because I was mucked up. Nelly Connalan and Florence who lived in Church Street said 'what is wrong?' I said I was all mucked up and my mum was going to kill me. So they took me in striped me off, washed my clothes, washed me ironed me and sent me back off home. When I got in my mother said what have you been up to because I went home like a brand new pin when I should have been going home scruffy and dirty.
