Shirley Bourge grew up in Adamsdown using Guilford Crescent Pool. She is now Swimming Development Officer

In the Guilford Crescent baths it was divided into three pools, the mixed pools, the ladies' pool and the men's pool. They were about 18 yards by 12. Today they are 25 m so they were a lot smaller. The mixed pool was bigger that was 25 yards. They also had diving boards there, of course today it wouldn't be allowed because of health and safety. Each pool had the changing rooms on the poolside, so you had your cubicles around the edge. In the ladies pool they had the Mikvah for the Jewish peoples celebrations and then next to them you had the slipper baths where if ladies wanted to have a bath they could go in and have one there. They also had the slipper baths over the men's side, because in those days men and women never used the same entrances. Its only if you wanted to mix then you walked down the long corridor and that led out to the mixed pool. In those days, the late 70's early 80's they also used to hire out the ladies' pool to the nudists club. Of course all the boys used to get up on the roof and go for a look. There was no lifeguards on duty then.
