Patti Flynn was born down the Docks during the war

It is all happy nice memories we have of the bay as opposed to this horrible scary place. I was born and bred down there and it wasn't in the least bit what people perceive. Bute Street that was the place of the prostitutes because of course this was a dock and there were seaman and that. The funny thing was that the prostitutes on Bute Street were not from the docks, they would come from other places girls would come to the docks town to earn money from over the bridge and all around. The girls that lived down the docks, because of the community- we had 90 odd churches down there, it wasn't the docks girls who were the prostitutes, you know times were very hard then and girls who had run away from home or needed to make some money. I think quite a few of those girls actually met somebody and settled down. Bute Street ran down here and our Bay was around Loudon Square and the park where the steamers used to come into the pier head to take people to Western Super Mare. All that happened there and Bute Street was just the passageway to the docks. The only time we went on Bute Street was to go to Volputs, which was a haberdashery to get elastic or pins. Apart from that we stayed in our bit. I think that element has given Cardiff Bay a reputation but also has made it what it is today.
