Dorothy Mudge, Nee Rowls was born down the docks. When she was 10 she moved with her family out to Ely.

My Dad worked in the docks all his life. He worked mainly with boats and he had a boat of his own that he would bring up the canal, he would take us out in the boat. I used to love going then. We would all be out half night sometimes and once a storm blew up and he said that we all had to just lie down and it would be ok. Well we did that and when we got home everybody was waiting on the side of the dock for us like a film. My mother was in the front; I think she thought we had gone forever. We used to go over to Flat Holm sometimes and one time the boat broke down and we had to be towed back!
