Judi Richards was born in Cardiff and studied at The Welsh College Of Music And Drama. She then went on to be manager of The New Theatre.
The Cardiff College Of Music And Drama was founded after the war by Raymond Edwards and it was based in the castle. The drawing room now was studio B and Black tower was also a rehearsal room. But whilst we were in these rooms there would still be tourists coming in and the peacocks were there. There was an awful cafe there called the Roman Cafe. I mean it would be shut by health and safety today. There was a lady who served tea and coffee out of chipped white enamel cups. But it really was where the students ate and you either had pie and chips or pie and eggs and lunch was 1 &6. Personally I have to say I never ate there because I would have been off trying one of the new wine bars or drinking Sherry off the wood. In the summer we would love it because all the tourists would come around and take photos of us performing. So we would show of like mad. It was an amazing place to study. It was quite strange because after I finished college I went away and then came back to be general manager of the New Theatre which my grandfather actually worked on.
