Beryl Jesse grew up in Splott during the 1930's

I can remember my cousin Valerie and I, on a Saturday afternoon, would go to Splott cinema which was on Splott Road you go up the hill over the bridge and the cinema was just over the hill. It is a Bingo hall now. My Grandfather would say to me, being the eldest- there is 6penny bit. Now with that 6p Valerie and I could go in the best seats in the cinema and then my Dad would give us money for sweets. We would go in the sweet shop before, and of course they knew us in the Sweet shop, and we would buy a huge bag of mixed sweets. All for 9p. We were lucky because a lot of kids never had sweets. I would say to Valerie these some kids without sweets lets give them some of ours. Our mothers always came to meet us from the cinema and then we would go to Clifton Street shopping.
