There used to be two different types of sales, cash and accounts, so if you had an account you were a privileged customer. Some of the customers with accounts were terrors, because they had an account they thought they owned the store. We had on one occasion a woman who complained, she was quite nasty. In most departments you could take things home on approval, for example if you wanted to check the colour of a rug on your carpet if they didn't return it within 7 days it was charged to their account.. In the clock department you couldn't have things on approval and there was a sign quite clearly stating it. Well this particular customer got quite nasty about it and played absolute hell over not getting this clock on approval- it was only guaranteed to the owner. Anyway she complained to the Managing Director and I was sent for, he looked up her account and found that she didn't pay her account, she was forever borrowing things and bringing them back. So he sent her a letter saying would she kindly pay up her account, as we couldn't afford her custom. Which I thought was wonderful. We had another one who had a wedding party. They used the dinner service for the wedding party and then sent it back with egg on the plates, again he rang up and said I am sure you wouldn't like it to go around the golf club that you had sent back a dinner service that you had used.
